Pearl River Solar Park Project Marks New Era in Mississippi's Renewable Energy

EDP Renewables North America, a renowned renewable energy firm, has unveiled its latest endeavor in the Southeast - the Pearl River Solar Park in Scott County, Mississippi. This marks the company's first venture into Mississippi, and it symbolizes a significant step forward in the state's clean energy journey.

A Glimpse at Pearl River Solar Park

Positioned in the northwestern region of the county, the Pearl River solar project boasts an impressive capacity of 210 MW. With the power it generates, it can cater to the energy needs of over 27,000 homes in Mississippi. The project consists of 400,000 monofacial and bifacial tracking photovoltaic panels which offer eco-friendly and cost-effective power to the state's electric grid.

Economic and Community Impact

The operation of the Pearl River Solar Park will inject more than $50 million in tax revenue into local governments. This financial benefit will support services like schools, health care facilities, fire departments, and other crucial county resources. Additionally, the project has created hundreds of construction jobs and will maintain two permanent jobs.

The community of Scott County will further benefit from a variety of eco-conscious initiatives spearheaded by the Pearl River project. Two such notable initiatives include the Pearl River Clean Sweep and an interactive career fair highlighting opportunities in the renewable energy sector.

In the former, the Pearl River development team has been involved in cleaning up the Pearl River watershed. In their most recent cleanup, they removed an estimated 400 pounds of trash from the river, showing their commitment to conserving Mississippi's natural environment.

Moreover, the team engaged with over 200 fifth-grade students from Highland Elementary School in Ridgeland in an interactive career fair. This engagement session surrounds discussions about possibilities and potentials of careers in the renewable energy sector.

Setting the Pace in Clean Energy

As per the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), Pearl River can be recognized as the largest solar park in Mississippi. One of the pivotal goals of its operation is to accelerate Mississippi's adoption of clean energy and contribute to its decarbonization objectives.

The CEO of EDPR NA, Sandhya Ganapathy, expressed her team's excitement over the launch of Pearl River's operation. She noted that the project would supply Mississippi with a readily accessible clean energy resource.

The collaboration between EDPR NA and Mississippi doesn't end with Pearl River. A second project, namely the Ragsdale Solar Park, is currently under development in Canton and will become operational very soon. Ragsdale will churn out 100 MW of energy, enough to power 15,000 typical homes in Mississippi, and generate over $51 million in benefits to local governments and landowners.
