CU Boulder Explores Virtual Net-Metering with A New 5-MW Solar Project
07/24/2024
Pivot Energy and the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) are spearheading a 5-MWDC virtual net-metering initiative which is a groundbreaking strategy under the aegis of Colorado Senate Bill 21-26 of 2021. This strategy empowers establishments to be part of the energy yield from off-site solar installations. CU Boulder will take advantage of the solar power generated by the remote net-metering solar scheme, eliminating the need for on-site installations.
The University will be integrated into the electric grid, with the capability to draw power from the solar project. The project’s entirety will be channeled to CU Boulder, with the university in return obtaining Renewable Energy Credits (RECs). This calculated move will aid the university in reaching its target of reducing its Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by half by 2030, and obtaining a carbon-neutral status by 2050.
Mat Elmore, SVP of strategic accounts at Pivot Energy, expressed the company’s delight in partnering with a globally recognized institution such as CU Boulder on a pro-environmental initiative. It is with such efforts that academic institutions will take the lead in advancing the shift towards clean energy.
CU Boulder showcases how clubs, colleges, and universities can influence the transition to cleaner energy. Recognizing how vital the 'Pivot Energy agreement' is to sustainability, University of Colorado Boulder Chancellor Justin Schwartz shared his excitement around launching such a transformative project.
The institution aims to complete the ambitious project by early 2026. In the meantime, more institutions can join the bandwagon by exploring solar installer reviews to make the transition. With the increasing need for sustainable power, attractive options like solar financing, lease, and loan are available. Further, institutions can consider investing in the best solar panels for homes or even the best home battery systems as a step towards independence from grid power. Organizations and individuals can learn more about solar energy benefits through the solar FAQ, which provides a comprehensive explanation of solar systems.
