His return to the solar industry saw him advocate for and establish SolarCycle, a recycling company focusing on crystalline silicon solar modules. With two operational facilities already in the US, along with a third underway, SolarCycle is making substantive headway with their recycling efforts.

SolarCycle, having processed modules from every US state and multiple North American territories, is not the only entity lending its services for the cause. SolarPanelRecycling.com (SPR), a subsidiary of electronics recycler Powerhouse Recycling, has four processing facilities across the US, providing end-of-life solar panel offtake to a broad range of national companies with large installation footprints.

Strengthening Green Initiatives and Preventing Landfill Waste

Despite being a distinctly green technology, some types of solar modules can be classified as solid or hazardous waste due to the presence of lead and cadmium telluride. Certain states have taken measures against these modules entering their landfills. Ensuring the discarded solar modules are safely processed not only has environmental benefits but economical ones too.

Elements within solar modules, even damaged or end-of-life ones, harbor potential value. Most solar panels share similar traits, typically consisting of glass, a metal frame (often aluminum), and elements such as silicon, copper, and silver. However, recycling these panels is not as simple as throwing them into a shredder - careful extraction and holistically responsible disposal are paramount. When successfully executed, the materials procured can then re-enter the supply chain.

Breaking Down the Journey of a Discarded Solar Panel

Solar panels, either destroyed due to manufacturing defects, damage during shipping or installation, weather damage, or nearing the end of their natural lifespan, are typically sent to recyclers. For logistic efficiency, the trend of deliberately positioning processing facilities in close proximity to areas with significant solar installations is on the rise.

Each panel embarks on its recycling journey with the removal of its junction box and metal frame, followed by the careful removal of glass to avoid contamination. What remains of the panel is then finely crushed and shredded, allowing for the extraction of precious metals. These materials run through a thorough cleaning and filtration process before re-entering the supply chain.

The Final Destination of Recycled Solar Panel Materials

Recycled elements find a new lease on life as they are sold to vendors and repurposed into various products. For instance, recycled glass is often repurposed into fiberglass insulation. Furthermore, plans for the production of new glass for solar panels using recycled materials are reportedly underway.

Industry analysts predict that by 2030, solar panel manufacturing could command up to a fifth of the global silver supply. As such, it's plausible that some of the silver recycled from solar panels could find its way back into the solar industry.

It's an exciting prospect, foretelling a future where solar panels are not only an integral part of our renewable energy solution, but their re-utilization becomes a norm - boosting sustainability efforts and solidifying solar power as a long-term green industry.
