Pioneering 6.1-MW Rooftop Community Solar Project Energizes Underserved Households in Washington, D.C

The recent unveiling of a massive 6.1-MW rooftop community solar project represents a significant progress in providing clean, renewable energy to low and moderate-income households in Washington, D.C. Spanning over 700,000 ft2 of rooftops, the expansive solar array stands as the largest rooftop community solar array in the District and ranks among the most substantial urban community solar projects nationwide.

Aligned Climate Capital spearheads the project, supported by Black Bear Energy and financing from DC Green Bank and Amalgamated Bank. This brand-new solar installation can generate an annual production exceeding 7 million kWh of clean energy. This capacity suffices to supply electricity to approximately 965 single-family homes.

Energy produced by this ambitious undertaking will be available to underserved households of the district, in line with the goals set by the District of Columbia Sustainable Energy Utility's Solar for All initiative. This project contributes to affordable solar energy distribution, with an estimated potential of saving D.C. households about $7.5 million over the next two decades.

Aligned Climate Capital's CEO, Peter Davidson, expressed his excitement at the role of solar power in providing cost-effective energy solutions. He further highlighted the importance and benefits of community solar projects, particularly to low-and-moderate-income residents. Aligned's investment in this undertaking underscores their active role in fostering clean energy access and encouraging wider renewable energy adoption throughout the District.

The partners convened a special ribbon-cutting ceremony signifying the successful completion and operation of this comprehensive solar array.

This venture is an excellent example of large-scale, low-cost renewable energy initiatives targeting a large demographic. Its success has paved the way for similar future projects aiming to provide environmentally-friendly power solutions to a wider audience.
