Terrasmart, an industry leader, has introduced a novel hail stow feature for its single-axis solar tracker - TerraTrak. The innovative hail stow mechanism enhances the risk mitigation functionality for PeakYield, Terrasmart's cloud-based tracker control, and monitoring appliance.

The hail mitigation system autonomously triggers stow posture to safeguard solar assets without the need for operator intervention, utilizing cloud-based weather forecasts. The hail stow solution is now available for both 1P and 2P trackers, expanding Terrasmart's extensive ground screw and driven piles racking portfolio designed to withstand adverse terrain and extreme weather conditions.

“Project de-risking remains our most significant contribution to the solar industry,” declared Terrasmart President, Ed McKiernan. “The new hail stow feature augments our existing range of foundation and racking products providing unique reliability to wealth of sites.”

The Terrasmart hail stow solution offers a plethora of benefits to asset owners and operators:

• The high-tilt stow angle takes into account both wind and hail conditions, removing contradicting positions and ensuring a safe tracker position (+/- 50° for 1P and +/- 60° for 2P)
• The intuitive auto-stow characteristic activates 60 minutes before a weather event but can be customized to suit owner specifications.
• Using the stow function eliminates the need for additional hardware or any calibration overtime.

Hail is one significant weather phenomena that can adversely impact U.S. solar sites. Insurance industry reports indicate that hail represents less than 2% of solar project insurance claims by volume but results in over 50% of total monetary losses.

Terrasmart’s software team will be showcasing live demos of PeakYield and discussing hail stow and other TerraTrak features at the forthcoming RE+ in Anaheim, this September.
